Thinking of my Brothers on Mountain Climbing Day
By Wang Wei
Alone, a lonely stranger in a foreign land,
I doubly pine for kinsfolk on a holiday.
I know my brothers would, with dogwood spray in hand,
Climb up mountain and miss me so far away.

In ancient times, there lived a man named Huan Jing. He was learning the magic arts from Fei Zhangfang, who had become an immortal after many years of practicing Taoism. One day, Fei Zhangfang told Huan Jing that on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month, disaster will come to his hometown and all the people will get infected and killed by the monster. On hearing this, Huan Jing rushed home and asked the villagers to do exactly as his teacher said. They all climbed to the top of a nearby mountain with a spray of dogwood in hand and did not return until the evening. Most importantly, they all drank some chrysanthemum wine. By following Fei’s instructions, all the villagers drove the monster away and lived peacefully.
Since then, climbing a mountain, carrying a spray of dogwood and drinking chrysanthemum wine became the traditional activities of the Double Ninth Festival to avoid evil spirits and misfortunes.

Chrysanthemum wine

The Double Ninth cake is also known as “chrysanthemum cake” or “flower cake”. It dates back to Zhou Dynasty. It is said that the cake was originally prepared after autumn harvests for farmers to have a taste of what was just in season, and it gradually grew into the present cake for people to eat on the Double Ninth Day.
六.The modern meaning
It helps people to develop a sense of respecting and caring for the old.
